1. Multimedia Converter Pro v2.0
With Multimedia Converter Pro v2.0 you can convert common video file formats to 3GPP format. When converting a video file, the size of the converted file is usually much smaller than the size of the original file. You can also convert common audio file formats to AMR format.
Use the following procedure to convert a video file:
1. In the menu, select File > Open. A dialog opens. Browse for the video file you want to convert and click OK. Alternatively, you can drag a file to Multimedia Converter. The file information is transferred to Original file fields on the left side of the dialog. The fields display the video and audio format types in the file. In order to get more detailed information about the file, select File Information> Show original file information.
2. Select one of the image size options in the Video tab (see Figure 2):
• sub-QCIF (128x96).
• QCIF (176x144).
3. Select the desired target video frame rate from Frame rate combo box (see Figure 2).
4. If you want to add periodic key frames to obtain faster random access, enter the desired key frame period in Intra period edit box (see Figure 2).
5. If the file contains both video and sound, select the AMR bit rate in the Audio tab (see Figure 2).
6. You can set the desired total file bit rate in File bit rate edit box.
This option is useful eg. when there is no fixed size limit for the produced file. When you set the file bit rate, video bit rate is calculated according to the selected AMR bit rate.It is also possible to create video clips for MMS by setting file bit rate. Then, you have to estimate an appropriate file bit rate to fit the whole clip into the limited file size.
7. It is also possible to set the size of the converted file size in Max file size edit box (see Figure 2). You can’t set both file size and file bit rate at the same time.
In MMS, size of a video file can’t exceed a certain value, for example 100 kB, because some WAP gateways might block the transfer of larger files, operators might prefer to limit the file size to reduce air-traffic, or because not all the MMS client and server implementations support large file sizes. That’s why limiting the size of the converted file is useful while generating video clips for MMS. The following paragraphs gives more details how Multimedia converter selects the critical coding parameters when file size is limited.
First, Multimedia converter calculates the total file bit rate in order to convert the whole original file and fit it into the limited size. If the calculated file bit rate is too small, in other words an acceptable quality figure can’t be reached, the conversion will be stopped when the limit is reached. The minimum bit rate to obtain an acceptable quality for video and audio are respectively, 20 kbps and 4.75 kbps.
Then the bit rate for video is calculated by decreasing the selected AMR bit rate from the calculated total file bit rate. If this amount is smaller than the minimum video bit rate, AMR bit rate is dropped until the bit rate for video can be acceptable.
NOTE! When the max file size option is used, the Multimedia Converter selects the coding parameters so that in normal cases the file size limit is not exceeded. In some cases, e.g. due to a complex video clip, this limit can be slightly exceeded. So it is strongly encouraged to check after the conversion the size of the produced file, and if necessary, set the Max file size limit somewhat smaller.
8. You can start the conversion from an offset point. Set the time stamp of the offset in Start time edit box (see Figure 2). The shortcut for this is to keep the CTRL key pressed and slide the original file location indicator to the correct position. This will update the time stamp information in the Start time edit box, too.
9. Click Convert. Enter the name of the converted file in the file save dialog. Then another dialog pops up and shows how the conversion progresses. The file information of the converted file is transferred to Converted file fields on the right side of the dialog.
4. Multimedia Converter Pro v2.0 Console Version
Multimedia Converter Pro v2.0 package contains also a console application. This will allow you to convert large number of files using batch files. When the package is installed, the executable will be copied into the target directory you selected during the installation process. You can use the program from MS-DOS prompt. The following paragraph summarizes the usage instructions of the console version of the Multimedia Converter Pro v2.0.
